Chinese schools linked to Google attacks?
You may have read recently about the large hack attack that was detected a few days back which internet giant Google we’re a victim of. Well according to the New York times, Security experts have traced the attacks to computers located at Shanghai Jiaotong University and Lanxiang Vocational School. Shanghai Jiaotong University is well known for its computer science program and the Lanxiang Vocational School was established with military support to train computer scientists for the military, which leads claims to that both their students could be capable of such hacking attacks.
In response to these accusations, China’s official Xinhua News Agency questioned a representative of the university who stated that the accusations are “baseless” and an official from the vocational school has said that an investigation has been carried out, and as a result no evidence was turned up linking the intrusions with school machines.
Google believe that the attacks were carefully planned as the e-mail accounts belonging to various human rights activists in China were compromised in “a highly sophisticated and targeted attack” probably originating in China. Google also stated that it discovered knowledge of the attacks in mid-December, which now leads to why Google announced around that time that they would be stopping the censoring of search results in China and may possibly be backing out of the Chinese market altogether.
