iOS Jailbreaking: My Thoughts

Overview:

When I got my first iOS device I thought jailbreaking was awesome. I had the iPod Touch 2G, just in case you were wondering. I jailbroke to use all the cool themes, and I would download a ton of themes! My iPod got really slow though.

Slow-performance:

That is one of the downsides to jailbreaking. Your phone could slow down drastically (varies on how many themes and tweaks you download). Especially if you have older devices with not very much RAM, your iPhone or iPod will crash a lot.

Aesthetics:

Next reason I’m not a big fan of the jailbreak community is that all their themes are incomplete and most of the tweaks are useless. I could never find a complete theme that I liked. It just didn’t look nice to me. The aesthetic quality is just horrible.

Viruses:

When you jailbreak, your phone is now open; meaning you are no longer protected by Apple’s closed system, and you are now open to viruses attacking your iPhone or iPod. BEWARE: Some viruses can permanently affect your iOS device.

iOS 4:

With the new iOS I have everything I could possibly want -- Home Screen wallpapers, multitasking, and folders. I have no need to jailbreak my phone anymore, and with the new updates it can only get better.

Resolution:

For those of you that do jailbreak, it’s not a bad thing. If you do like Cydia and you completely disagree with me, then go ahead and jailbreak your device. It’s legal. I’m just not a fan of it or recommend doing it, but that’s just me.

Personally, I don't mind having a bit slower of a device because it doesn't effect me that much. But as far as themes, I usually just download a new dock style and change the wallpaper and mess with icon names showing and now showing just to keep it simple. But I guess I would be more concerned with the slower performance if I had an iPhone and not just an iPod Touch.

In terms of aesthetics, you could also make your own theme, combining themes that you like already and get your perfect theme. a large part of jailbreaking is tweaking your device to what you want it to be, not what anyone else, including Apple, tells you it should be.
