Some Apps Every Rooted Android Phone Should Have

If your lucky enough to have a rooted Android phone then there is a couple of things you can do that ordinary Android phones can't. Some people have the opinion that rooted phones are used for nothing but getting free apps and other piracy/illegal purposes. This is entirely untrue and as a continuation of my Tech Lovers Apps post I'll detail 2 apps which have amazing uses but are available to only root users.

Cyanogen is a popular rooted custom firmware for Android Phones

Apps for Rooted phones

If you have a rooted phone you can get some apps that won't work if your phone were't rooted. 2 particular apps always come to mind when I speak to someone with a rooted phone. Titanium Backup and SetCPU.

  • Titanium Backup Pro - Allows you to back-up your apps and their data just in case something happens to your phone or tablet. When you restore the app everything that was there in the app when you backed it up is there once again.
    • This is an improvement over any of the built-in back-up facilities which does not back up the data contained within the app.
  • SetCPU for Root Users - This is an overclocking and undervolting app in one.You can either increase the performance of your phone or make the batter last longer using SetCPU.  It allows you to set certain profiles to control when your CPU speed is changes.
    • Overclocking increases the frequency of your processors clock speed. In essence making the processor faster. To give you an example in easy to understand terms my Galaxy Tab 10.1 is overclocked from 1.0 GHz to 1.4 Ghz and the device runs about 1.4 times faster. I can now process 250 emails in a background process whereas previously it would lock up the device for 30 seconds+. For you to be able to overclock your phone you need to have it running on a custom kernel. These are normally included within rooted firmwares already.
    • Undervolting is the opposite of Overclocking, you send less voltage to the processor and the clock slows. Sending less power to it saves on battery. You can set it up to undervolt under certain situations. For instance when the screen is off. You probably aren't using your phone when the screen's off but the processor is still running as fast as ever. Undervolting in that situation saves battery and doesn't give any performance decrease when your using your phone as it goes back to normal when the screen comes back on. You could also attach it to the low battery profile to get the longest life out of your last bit of battery.

Apps that everyone should have

  1. YouTube - Have you ever got lost watching YouTube videos? Of course you have. Ever since Flash was removed from Android people have needed a way of watching videos online. Using the YouTube app you never have to worry about an incompatible video file.
  2. Facebook - I bet most of your friends have a Facebook account, you probably do too. That's why there's Facebook for Android.
  3. G+ - The Google+ app is really user friendly but most of us have just one problem with moving to G+: knowing none of our friends use it lol! I use if to follow some news groups and people to keep on top of the news I need to know.
  4. Skype - The Android version of Skype allows text, voice and video calls to be made using your Skype account.

What Other Apps Do You Consider Must-Have?

I detailed some the apps that I can't do without in the previous post but Titanium Backup and SetCPU are 2 apps that everyone with a rooted phone should check out. Do you have a rooted phone? What apps to you make use of?
