Chrome Apps: Episode 1 (YTVD)

While browsing through the Chrome Web Store I found the app “YouTube Video Deck”. It looked pretty interesting so I decided to take a closer look at it. I downloaded the app and started to mess with it. Through the screenshot that was provided at the app store, it was a column based design similar to tweet deck. I didn’t know if the app was for the content feed or just the videos. I will say this much, I was thoroughly impressed with the YouTube Video Deck. When you first install the application you are asked to log into your YouTube account. Once you do that you will be guided to add your subscriptions to a column so that you can pick which subscription you would like to see from the most instead of all the subscriptions. Also this shows the video uploads only, not the recommended videos or the comments/user feedback meaning less crap on your screen and more videos that you wanted to see.

One of the key features I am pretty excited about (but doesn’t work yet) is the “Remove Watched” button. In theory the button is to remove all of the videos you have already seen and only show the ones you haven’t yet watched. I think this would be a very good feature to have if your subscription uploads a lot of videos in one day (I.e. Chris Pirillo). Another plus to this app is the ability to be able to create custom columns. For example I was able to sort out all of my animator subscriptions and put them into one category. This means that whoever is an animator and uploads a video, it will go under this one category instead of taking up more space with adding all of them separately.

Other than all of that, you can buy some ad space for cheap, and there is a pro version. But I didn’t want to spend money on something I really don’t need. Because you can move the ads from bottom to the left corner and they are not video ads, so they don’t bug you as much as youtube does. I am not sure what the pro version does, but if I was to take a guess I would say it removes all of the ads from the side/bottom and gives you some free ad rights yourself. But I am not 100% sure on that yet.  I hope you enjoyed the video and I hope you are willing to try out this free ap. Get rid of the left aligned clustered YouTube layout and go with something that gives you more control. I will see you next time.
