Facebook Buys Oculus

One of the biggest purchases of this week which surprised both me and the tech community was Facebook’s recent buyout of the Oculus Company and device. The Company was bought out for $400 million dollars in cash, $1.6 Billion in Facebook stock, and an additional $300 million will be given if the product meets certain performance quote. Although this may seem like a lot of money (which for any other person it is) I don’t believe the Facebook stock would be worth it. Facebook is a Social Media based website much like Myspace, it’s a fad that might die out in the future. If you look at a quote for the Facebook stock you’ll notice the odd traveling pattern for its odd stock pattern. But if I were to think about it in the long run, Facebook is a Company willing to make investments to make something better, so they could be the next Apple.

So what is the Oculus Rift? A good way of thinking about this device is a virtual reality headset that allows you to control the head movement of your character in a First Person Shooter, or anything in a first person perspective. Many game developers were excited about this product and even the creators of doom was assisting in making a Doom 3 game to work with this device as well. This allowed for a new way of playing games, especially survival horror based games. I was excited about this device because of the ability to develop further with different gadgets. A way for you to walk and control the character while being active, this would give was games a whole new feeling of rush and excitement. A new way of gaming, and something only my childhood self could of wished about seeing.

Although Facebook buying out this company could be a good thing, a good chunk of people were worried about it being a failure because of the buyout. There are some good reasons as to why you shouldn’t worry about this purchase. Facebook is a Company, they know a lot about risk taking and running a business. Think about it like this, Oculus has more funding and research development money to allow for something better. So improving the product and having a more financially stable environment will allow for a better product. But if you’re not sold on this product because of the purchase, don’t worry; Sony is working on Project Morpheus which is essentially the same thing.

Personally as a consumer and a gamer, I believe everything will work out in the end. Sure it may be an upsetting experience for some people, but the product is going to be the same. Mark understood it was a risk buying the company but saw an opportunity and a product that could prove to be useful in the long run. I believe it was a worthwhile investment.
