Spider silk, a material that can be found naturally on little critters that give many of us the icks, is being hailed as "new super material of the future" due to its surprising resilience, strength, and elasticity.

Before arriving at this realization, scientists put the material through a variety of rigorous tests, comparing it to materials that are generally recognized for these characteristics, such as steel, kevlar, and rubber bands - and spider silk proved superior in every case.

Of the thousands of companies seeking funding, just over 1,000 of them were receiving funding for the first time in their existence. The most notable startups in the modern age received their start in this general area, adding to the enthusiasm and the idea that Silicon Valley is a constant gold mine for technological innovation.
