WWDC: My Thoughts on iOS5

I have just watched the Apple iOS5 keynote and to be quite honest, it disappointed me.

Firstly - Twitter integration. It took me a while to see what I love about iOS, and why no other mobile operating system has done it for me, but because of Twitter integration I now have an answer. Isolation. Since the very start, every app has always been isolated to its own little space, and I love that. In android, there are app widgets, this removes the isolation from the rest of the system. I don't know about Blackberry OS as I have never used it, but I'm sure something like that applies. Twitter integration just seems to go against everything that iOS stands for.

Then there's iMessage. From the very start I could see something wrong with it - the icon. People who aren't very tech-savvy, my parents for example, could quite possibly mix up the iMessage app with the Messages app. The fact that they also have very similar names doesn't help with distinguishing the two apps. Furthermore, from the very limited demo we saw, there doesn't seem to be great new features that would make people use this, instead of say PingChat. There are thousands of cross platform apps that do the same thing, quite possibly better, with an already established user-base.

This next thing is a little critical, but it really annoyed me. The lock screen Camera button. It just looked out of place. And to be completely honest, it saves about 5 taps at most.

I will admit that there are some great new features, such as the new additions to Safari, and the amazing new photo editing with Photos. But, in the end, it is still very underwhelming for me. I would love to hear your point of view on this, comment below or contact me on Twitter - @NatIsGleek.
