When the Worst Happens - Some Important Advice

Last week was a very sad week for me. On Tuesday I slipped down the stairs and dropped my MacBook, causing it irreparable damage.  Some might say it was my own fault. I shouldn't have been carrying it open, but in the rush of everyday life we all do it.

What have I learned from this experience?

  • Never (ever) carry a laptop open
  • Check your insurance policy carefully to see if laptops are covered. To my horror I have discovered that my household insurance policy does not cover any portable devices including laptops, iPads, and iPods.  This has been a real surprise to me as I assumed (having never read all the small print) that they would be covered.
  • Time Machine backups to external devices are worth their weight in gold! At the moment I have daily backups going back months on my external HDD.  Knowing that all my pictures, data and videos are secure is so reassuring.

Many of my friends say that it is only a laptop and it can be replaced. This is very true, but as a real Apple fanboy to see my precious MacBook smashed and totally dead was heartbreaking.

Time to start saving!
