Tek Nation Episode 5: Is the Epic 4G Epic?

Tek Nation is back again. Today's topics were Facebook's new "Places" feature, the Samsung Epic 4G, Intel's purchase of McAfee, and more! Personally I'm not a huge fan of the Places feature on Facebook. I don't really know why anyone would need to use it. There are already other networks for location sharing such as Gowalla and Foursquare. I think Facebook Places will fail.

Samsung will be releasing the 2nd 4G phone to the US market on August 31, 2010. It's called the Samsung Epic 4G. The first 4G phone to reach the US market was the HTC Evo 4G. The phone features a 4 inch multi touch display with a full slide out qwerty keyboard, front facing camera, and a 5 MP camera with an LED flash. The phone also runs on Android 2.1. Personally I'm getting sick of all these Android phones. It seems like everyday there's a new phone running Android that comes out.

Unboxed: Samsung Captivate

Samsung has finally released the Samsung Captivate, the Galaxy S phone for AT&T. This is one of the 4 that will be on major US carriers, and also two more for other carriers in the states. This is the first one to hit the US market, which will be on Sunday July 18. Price for this one is $199.99 on 2 year contract, and $349.99 for the phone with no contract.

The Samsung Captivate has a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, which they state that sunlight will not make the screen unreadable, so I will have to test that in the daylight and other light sources. But in first impressions, the screen reproduces the colors like never before, maybe better than Apple’s Retina Display? I will have to test that as well.

The Captivate has a 1GHZ Hummingbird processor which makes this blazing fast, I shot a video about the Droid X vs Samsung Captivate and the Samsung Captivate won in the speed test of loading up this website!

Overall the first impressions are strong, it runs Android 2.1 with a custom Samsung TouchWiz UI over it, which makes Android all the better, not as good as HTC Sense, but it is functional.

Samsung Impression Review and Specs

The Samsung Impression has had a great "impression" on me and I love it! It has just the right dimensions to fit well in my hands The phone runs on AT&T and will set you back about $30, which is a great price for a new feature phone. The case I have on the phone is from AccessoryOne, but when I bought it said eForCity. You can pick up the case below for only $2.99.

Samsung Impression Review

Here is a review of a feature phone, which means non-smart phone. The phone has a great Touch-Wiz interface. The phone also starts at a very low cost of $149.99 on a 2 year contract. It also features a full qwerty keyboard. It’s a great phone for kids. I actually own the device myself and I thought this was a great review by my co-worker Marco, who is a reviewer and writer for our YouTube channel Gadget Experts. We hope you enjoy this video and the post was helpful to you.

Gmail on Phones

I am looking to buy a Samsung Magnet from AT&T because it is great for messaging and it is incredibly in-expensive. So I started watching some review videos on YouTube and all the reviewer’s noted that the phone didn’t support Gmail. I love Gmail. It is the best email service that I have used and I am sort of upset that it is not supported. Now I know I shouldn’t be expecting much from such a low-cost phone but adding a simple mail service isn’t a big deal and should already be there. I just wanted to let you know my thoughts on this and I am always up for hearing other people’s thoughts on this. Just leave a comment in the comment section below. Thanks!
