Amazon Kindle 3 Review

The Amazon Kindle 3 is one of the most stable ereaders on the market. This is Amazon's third attempt at perfecting the ereader, and I feel that they have done an impressive job. This is not to say that other ereaders aren't any good, I feel that ereaders as a whole are a really neat thing, I just feel that after using the Kindle 3 from Amazon, other ereaders will have to work hard at compeating.

There are many unique features about the Amazon Kindle 3, including it's many great tools that come included with the ereader itself, things that have become a standard for most ereaders. Such as, text-to-speech, changing the font and line spacing, samples, and just released today, book lending. Amazon announced today that Kindle users can now lend many of the books available in the kindle store, depending of course upon the publishers permission.

The kindle is overall a very great ereader that boast many features, and of course the Amazon Kindle Store is a very big plus for those of you who shop on Amazon.com to begin with. It connects to your Amazon account easily, and makes reading, purchasing, and lending books as simple as the push of a button.

Better Battery Life: Smartphone Data 3G vs WiFi

Smartphones have become fairly mainstream recently and all I hear is how WiFi kills your battery and how 3G is slow (in most city areas). While both statements above are true, you can get the best of both worlds.

WiFi is often disregarded by mobile users unless they are at home and have a charger nearby. The sole reason being, it can drain your tiny smartphone battery quickly if not used correctly. Although this is a downside, WiFi is far more efficient than 3G when it comes to downloading and extended mobile browsing. Another thing that most people don't realize is that 3G draws more juice than WiFi when actually being used, communicating with the tower is no small task for your handheld device. In city areas it's even worse, everyone connecting makes the network slow which in turn lengthens the amount of time your phone needs to hold a solid connection with it.

Enough with the technical stuff, you obviously just want a fix.

The answer is fairly simple, to get the best out of your phone turn WiFi on when updating applications and watching YouTube videos. (This also will save you precious MB's with the new Data caps! :))

As soon as you are finished with your data hungry task, flip it off and carry on with your day! Leaving WiFi on keeps your phone searching for a network as you roam about during the day. The scanning and analyzing of local WiFi networks is what chews up your battery like a rottweiler. To make it simple for you lazy people who didn't want to read or are not sure when to switch it up, I made an easy to use chart :D Click to view it big! (Note: I am no artist)

When to use WiFi! Click to Enlarge

At a glance you can tell when to use WiFi and when to use 3G!

Helpful Tip - If you have an Android phone make a widget (like the one below) on one of your homescreens so you can flip it on and off quickly and easily.

Were Smartphones "Slow" Phones Before 3G? 4G?

This article was used and submitted with permission from jakeculpmedia.com.

Yesterday, I was checking my email on my phone and I had come to realize that even with 3G running, it was still slow. Even though my phone is not a smart phone, (its a world phone, the Samsung Impression to be exact) it still is fast enough to compare with other smart phones. With the new Evo 4G from Sprint coming out, does this mean that we are now getting into the "fast" smart phone age? Mmy opinion is that smartphones don't really have to be so called "fast" in order to be a smartphone. A smartphone's job is to make it easier for the average person to check their email and browse the web. Speed is not a factor in this situation. I think that most smartphones do that and do it very well.

My point is that smartphones do what they say they do, they are SMART. They help create and manage your everyday tasks in your life with ease. Yes, smartphones were "slow" phones before 3g or 4g, but that is not the point; the point is that smartphones help run your life PERIOD.

This Week in Phones #1 - iPhone Alternatives

With all the hype around the possible leaked 4th Generation iPhone, I think a lot of people are forgetting about other handsets recently released that kind of blow the iPhone out of the dust.

 HTC Evo 4G

The Evo 4G, on Sprint, is designed by HTC with power in mind. Sporting a gorgeous (and huge) 4.3 inch display, dual cameras including a front facing camera, and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the Evo is an absolute screamer! The Evo also has the ability to connect up to 8-wifi enabled devices, similar to what we’ve seen in other Palm devices. Being the first mobile phone to feature 4G technology, the phone is always fast! Most importantly, the Evo is on a better network than the iPhone, so you can really take advantage of 4G strengths, which AT&T does not offer. Pricing for this phone has not been announced, but is expected to be released sometime this Summer.

 HTC Droid Incredible

Phone manufacturers have to be pretty bold to name their phone “Incredible” but apparently HTC hit the mark. With a 3.7 inch AMOLED display and an 8-megapixel camera (which seems to be becoming the norm now a days), the Incredible really ones-up the iPhone. The Incredible is also on a much better network, that being Verizon Wireless, so you can really take advantage of faster data speeds.

 Nexus One

Google’s Nexus One, toted as “The Google Experience”, is a very powerful Android phone. The Nexus One is available on multiple carriers, T-Mobile and AT&T (AT&T unlocked only) makes it a very versatile phone available to customers on different networks. The Nexus One offers a 3.7 inch AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, so it has a very large feature set.

In conclusion, those are just a few iPhone alternatives, all with much different feature sets than the iPhone and all on a better cellular networks. Even though the iPhone conveys a certain socioeconomic status to others, other manufacturers are developing phones with a better feature set, so next time you’re shopping for a mobile phones, look into some other iPhone alternatives.

The iPad is not a large iPhone. The iPhone is a small iPad.

I am very excited for the next iPhone…

I think it will have some great features, learning from the iPad; a 1GHz processor, an all-aluminum back (like the first iPhone), and a gorgeous screen. Not to mention it'll come with iPhone firmware 4.0!

Read this article first.

All the past iPhone upgrades have been small. Collectively, all they added was 3G, GPS, a faster processor, and a video camera. Not much to brag about. The Nexus One and Android are a serious threat to the iPhone. While not as elegant and nice, they have many features that some nerds lust about–regardless of the ugly UI. The iPhone needs to stay on top. The first iPhone destroyed competition. The 3G and the 3GS…well…not so much. As Steve himself said, the next iPhone will be an A+ upgrade.

I think with the addition of a powerful processor, the next iPhone will allow multiple apps to be open simultaneously, as well as a 5 megapixel camera, and an incredibly long-lasting battery.
