[Review] Avantree 'Pluto Air' Hybrid Bluetooth Speaker

I have always been impressed by these little Bluetooth speakers, and the Pluto Air from Avantree is no exception.

I must thank Avantree for sending this out for review.

When you receive the product you are greeted to this small, not so powerful looking speaker sitting in the box along with instructions, a 3.5mm audio cable, USB charging cable and a carrying pouch, the device to me didn't seem like much of a product. I instantly got it out and paired it up to my smartphone and my mind was changed. The music quality is a lot better than I had originally expected. There isn't much in terms of bass, but that is expected from such a small unit. The pairing was smooth and quick, and I managed to get the device to pair with my Mac and my phone effortlessly. I would say you get more quality through the 3.5mm cable, which may not be gold-plated, it still carries good quality.

Bose SoundLink® - My Review

The Bose SoundLink® is a portable Bluetooth speaker for your iDevice, Android device, Windows 7 device, and even your laptop/desktop computer, basically anything with bluetooth will work with it. (Apart from Bluetooth headsets). In this article, I am going to have my say on this beast of a speaker!

Having owned this device, I can say that I am more than pleased with the Bose SoundLink®. The quality of the auido is outstanding, the bass is superb and doesn't distort at full volume.

The Bose SoundLink® takes only 3-5 hours to complete a full charge, and can last up to 6 to 8 hours until the battery dies.

If you do not have a Bluetooth-enabled device, you can connect any other device to the Bose SoundLink® with the AUX cable that comes provided in the box, Which is very handy!

The built-in magnetic cover which protects the grill of the speaker quickly and conveniently folds out into a stand as the Bose SoundLink® Will not support itself with out it. (Which is a slight downfall).

On the top of the Bose SoundLink®, you find the Following:

  • Power on/off
  • AUX
  • Bluetooth
  • Mute
  • Volume Down
  • Volume Up

This speaker is available in 2 variaties. You can purchase the Bose SoundLink® in a Matt Finish with a Dark Grey Nylon Cover, which retails for £259/$299. You also have the choice of purchasing the slightly more up-market Bose SoundLink® LX, which comes in a Chrome finish with a Genuine Dark Brown Leather Cover, which retails for £299/$350.

There are some downfall's with the spaker though. From my experience, it doesn't always seem to want to connect to my Apple iPhone 4. so I turned Bluetooth off and on again on my phone, clicked "Bose SoundLink" from the device list and it successfully connected to the speaker. I then went to play some music and the song was playing from my phone speaker and not the Bose SoundLink®!! So, I handed the Bose SoundLink® back to my local electronic's dealer and I am recieving a new one later this week. The second downfall is to do with the magnetic cover/stand, since the Bose SoundLink® doesn't support itself with out a stand, I need to lay my speaker down on it's back when not in use, this is not convenient as it might collect dust and other particals on the back of the speaker over a period of time.

So, overall I give the Bose SoundLink® Portable Bluetooth Speaker a Whopping 9 out of 10!

Type Super Fast on iPhone or iPod touch with BTstack

Anyone with a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch can now type with any wireless Bluetooth keyboard with BTstack. BTstack is a $5 app found in Cydia under BigBoss. This is another great app that I'm sure Apple will support at some point, but why wait? If you can type 80 words per minute, then you can type that fast on your iPhone. The Bluetooth app syncs and pairs easily with your keyboard allowing you to then type in Notes, Safari, Mail or any other app.

Tap the icon with a picture and label of "keyboard" and it begins to scan for Bluetooth devices. It should find your keyboard within a few seconds. Simply tap to select it and away you go. It's really amazing how fast things are moving along in the mobile industry. Soon I suspect the keyboard will fold into a nice rectangle that fits within the back of an iPhone case. The BTstack keyboard is just one more little step in mobile computing. I made a quick video to show this app in action. How long until Apple adds a native app to do the same function?
