5 Reasons Why Apple Is Successful

Many of us on TekSocial are huge Apple fans. That goes without saying. With the recent resignation of Steve Jobs as CEO, I think it is a good time to have a look back on why Apple is so successful, and will continue being so. First off, I'd just like to say these are my opinions on how Apple has become so successful, and I'm happy for you all to post your comments on how you feel about the reasons, and add any that you feel are neccesary.

Note, These are no specific order.

1. Experience - Apple has been in the technology industry for 35 Years! That gives them the edge on newer industrys, as they have that kind of knowledge of the technology market, and know what consumers want. (Now don't get me wrong, Apple has made a couple of mistakes in the past, but nobody is perfect)

2. Innovation - When innovation comes to mind, we all think 'futuristic' am I right? Well that is exactly what Apple are, they produce products that nobody would have ever thought of for another 10, 20 years.

3. Constant change - Now when I say constant change, what I mean is that Apple changes their own competitors market by themselves. Apple has a very positive history of being able to 'innovate' new products into the market, which then puts their competitors on the back foot, as they are years behind them.

4. Marketing - Myself & friends are always talking about the latest ways that Apple has found to advertise their products, most notably their TV commercials. Apple has potentially the best marketing experts in the world working on how to promote their product. Most notably, I remember the first iPad commercial, at the perfect time at Superbowl half time break.

5. Creativity - This is very much like Innovation, but the two together are basically what make Apple what it is today. Apple creates/innovates new products, so well, again their competitors find it hard to keep up with them. And with competitors that are behind them, Apple is always going to be on top.

I understand guys that this is really 4 reasons, as 2 of them are pretty much the same thing, but these I feel are the main reasons Apple is so successful in todays business.

Thoughts: iPhone 4G

The iPhone has grew to become one of the most popular yet powerful phones on the market and after 3 years, it still has room to grow. June 29, 2007 saw the release of the first generation iPhone and now in 2010 we are already talking about the fourth release.

Coming from a UK based point of view, 3G isn't everything. Yes, it may produce a fast and strong connection with the iPhone and the outside world, but I think with the release of the iPhone 4G, Apple should release HSDPA as standard, which has a higher specification of speed and performance. Apple could also extend the screen to it fills upto 90-95% of the unit. It would also be good to see a touch button instead of the physical button, which takes up 10% of the unit. Since it is suitable for iPod quality sound, additional speakers could be place at the top and bottom of the iPhone, giving a much better sound quality.

On the external side of the iPhone, it would be good if Apple slimmed down the unit, giving it a even more refined look. When adjusting the volume on the current iPhone it can be a little fiddly, so defining the buttons would be another good move in the 4G.

I hope you see my post interesting and I would like to see Apple consider the redesign of the iPhone, to make it the revolutionary phone of the decade.

Chrome OS: Haven’t You Heard of Linux?

After reading dozens, and I mean dozens of articles about Chrome OS and how it is going to be a hit to Microsoft and Apple. When reading the articles, they usually run down the features of the operating system, and the announcements that Google made about it.

Here is an example list from ZDnet.

Timing.

Note the 12-18 month delivery: they’ve been watching how M$ freezes the market with “strategic” pre-annoucements.

Pricing.

Free, as in open-source. M$ will have to fight for every dollar from netbook makers. Google should be handing out “Chrome OS” coffee cups to every M$ OEM starting with HP and Dell.

Target.

Developers: “For application developers, the web is the platform. . . . [it will give] developers the largest user base of any platform.”

Goal.

“. . . computers need to get better.” More like a big smartphone and less like a server – a clear swipe at M$.

Market.

“. . . small netbooks to full-size desktop systems.” Google is generously ceding the server OS market to M$ and Linux – for now.

Hm. Sounds a lot like something we know already huh?

Let’s go back to pricing. Notice that it says that it will be free and open-source. Just about every Linux distro is open source and completely free, all you have to do is download the disk image and burn it to a disk (excluding SUSE).

Let’s take a look at the market as well. Is linux aimed at netbooks as well? Yes. Linux is so lightweight, just as Google says Chrome OS will be, that it needs very little memory and processing power to run and still be fast, sometimes as little as 256MB-512MB of RAM.

I’m surprised Google gave the OS a target. You shouldn’t be “targeting” any certain group, if you are making an operating system, it’s best that you advertise it to be the best for EVERYONE, not a certain group. Bad on Google’s part. Even if they are including developer tools to really make it “special” for developers, it seems very un-google-like to not target the entire user base.

What’s all the hype about?
