The iPhone Isn't Just a Phone

"A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality" according to wikipedia. The Apple iPhone isn't a regular smartphone. In my mind the iPhone is more than just a phone that can call, send text messages, view photos, and with the Windows Mobile Phones work with Word mobile.

Apple makes everything the way they want and of course different. As there are no complete set of rules to what a smartphone can have, Apple went all out with the iPhone 3G and now the iPhone 3Gs. The first iPhone was the Simon that featured a calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, note pad, e-mail, send and receive fax, and games. It like the iPhone was touch screen with no physical buttons as well, but the touch screen on the iPhone is like no other. The screen on the iPhone is multi-touch for those who didn't know and what that is it allows many different finger techniques to be used for many features on the phone.

When most people think smart phone they think BlackBerry, BlackJack, Palm or a Nokia phone. When I think smart phone I think iPhone. The iPhone can do all of the things I had said earlier, but it can also... play third party games via the app store, have billions of free and paid applications via the app store, be a mobile device that isn't just a portable computer, but way more complex and better.

Why would thousands of people wait in line for hours waiting for the latest and greatest iPhone? Because it isn't just a regular phone it is once again much more.

PS3 HDD Upgrade?

Like many, I use my PS3 for media. In fact, it is all I use my PS3 for as I do not currently own any games. As such, my PS3 is completely clogged up with media and I am beginning to run low on space.

Two nights ago, I was wracking my brains attempting to formulate an idea for yesterday's blog post. I may or may not have mentioned that I intend to write a blog post daily, so thinking up an idea can prove to be tricky. This blog post is only late because it took a little longer to produce than I had hoped, and the filming of a future entry we also shot yesterday turned out to be an epic fail that consumed all time for blog writing and video editing/uploading. So I apologize.

Anyway, It suddenly came to me. A couple of months back, my 160GB (double the storage of the PS3) died on me without warning. With the help of time machine and my savings account, the same day I was back up and running on a faster 250GB drive. I put the old HDD away, thinking nothing of it. Recently I have read various sites talking of ways HDDs can recover, some entirely miraculously, so I thought why not give it a try in the PS3.

Even if it doesn't work, it still shows how to upgrade the drive, so this entry is at least useful in some remote way. Will it work? Watch to find out.

Before I hand over to my lovely looking face and my good pal Amanda, I feel I should link you to the guide I read prior to this video. That way this blog is self contained and teaches you something without having to watch the video, instead of it just being a lame attempt at promoting my own video content.

But anyway, without further ado I bring you 'PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade?'

Microsoft's New Misleading Ad

Microsoft has yet again released another "PC's are junk, but they're cheaper than Macs" ads. This one features Lauren (they can't come up with a new name?) and her mom trying to find a laptop with "speed, portability, and battery life" for under $1,700. She goes around a Best Buy (at least it looks like one) and browses through their selection of computers, and ventures into the Mac section. She picks up a Mac Pro (the ad does not tell the view it is a Pro, you can only tell by the name on the small price sticker that is on the screen for about a second) and says its $1999 price tag is too expensive, and it does go over her budget, which would be fine, if they told the viewer this is Apple's high-end product. What gets me angry is that Microsoft once again is attacking Apple's prices without giving the viewer all the facts. Also, why such the large amout of money in this one? I guess this is Microsoft's way of saying that you cannot get a Mac for under 1,700, but of course you can. This Lauren lady could have purchased a regular 13" Macbook for $1,299 or $1,599, both still under her budget.

How To Get Customize Machine's Schedule

As you know, one of the cool features that was released in Mac OS X Leopard was Time Machine, which allows you to have automated backups every hour. Now time machine is a great feature because you should always back up your system, and it does it in a very great, Apple way. The only problem that it has is that it has to be done every hour, and doesn't let your specify if you want it more frequently or less. Also it takes up a lot of CPU usage, and slows down you system.

But there is one way to make it back up when you want it to. First you need to go to into Time Machine's prefrences by clicking on the icon in the menu bar. Then in the window that pops up, move On and Off slider to the off position, then close the window.

Now when ever you want Time Machine to do its backups, click back up on the menu icon, and go down to 'Back Up Now'. Now you can use the very handy back up utility when you want it, not when the computer wants to.

Of course this whole process requires an external hard drive. There very cheap now, and you should definitely keep a back up in case something may go wrong. You can get a 500 GB hard drive for only about $100, and again, its something you should definitely have.
